This share site is our attempt to facilitate an exchange if ideas and resources to more easily support young children with disabilities to receive services in the same settings as their non-disabled peers. You can upload activities you have created and use and download activities others have shared. Mayer Johnson, now a division of Dynavox Industries, sponsors a great site for sharing Boardmaker activities at Adapted Learning.com click here to link |
I have great things I want to share (even if you don't think they're great we probably will). |

Tabbed Symbol Books |
Tabbed Symbol Books are large communication symbols used to assist verbal comprehension and management of problem behaviors in a classroom setting. Typically, they consist of a set of commonly used symbols bound together and tabbed for easy access. There are several versions, created by different people, available to download as Boardmaker files or PDF documents. While each is a variant on the same theme, you will find commonly used symbols like "Sit down", "Quiet", "Line Up", and "Work Hands / Hands Down". Tabbed Symbol Books have been successfully used with students presenting a range of communication needs and were introduced to us in a workshop by Barbara Bloomfield several years ago - she calls them Super Symbols. Teachers of non-communication challenged preschoolers and early elementary aged students will also find Tabbed Symbol Books helpful as a quick attention-getting strategy and teaching tool for positive behavior management. We have three sets available to download. Each download is a .zip folder containing either a Boardmaker or PDF set of Tabbed Symbol Books. You will need a copy of Boardmaker to open and modify the Boardmaker files. The PDF versions can't be easily modified, but are ready for anyone to print and use. If you don't want to download, print and laminate our versions, you can purchase Super Symbols for $80.00 through IconTalk at http://www.icontalk.com/IT-1.html |

First - Then boards |
First - Then boards are used to communicate a sequence of events or to reinforce completion of an activity. First - Then boards are based on a "first-then" strategy; that is, "first you do ___, then you do ___", rather than an "if-then" approach (i.e., "if you do ___, then you can do___"). A First - Then board can be used in a variety of ways: o Assist with transition from one activity to another, e.g. . First "circle time" - Then "recess". o Assist in completing non-preferred tasks by reinforcing with a preferred activity, e.g. First "clean up" - Then "change centers". o Breaking a large schedule or sequence of events into smaller steps, e.g. . First "flush" - Then "wash hands". First - Then cards are easy to make, but if you choose to download our First - Then card, itis available in Boardmaker and PDF version with two First - Then cards on page one and 20 sample activities to use on page two. |
Routines |
Visual sequencing of the steps in the routines we expect out kids to move toward indepencence in can help them master the routines and allow adults to fade back more quickly. The visual supports are concrete reminders of the steps in a routine or task that children can refer to as needed. You can use a variety of visual representations from real objects, to real photos, to pictures, to text. Our belief is to always pair text with what ever visual representation you use. In English, we read left to right so visuals should be presented the same way for children we expect to connect with English text. |
